In the months and weeks leading up to the November 6, 2018 General Election, Rich Smith continuously reported on the race on SLOG, The Stranger’s online blog. In order to help Rich’s coverage of the race stand out from other publications online, we decided we needed an eye-catching and colorful alternative to standard-issue campaign photos of the candidates vying for a position in the 8th Congressional District race.

Our talented staff designer and illustrator Chelcie Blackmun drew out several icons that matched up with Shannon Hader, Jason Ritter, and Kim Schrier’s platforms, which I turned into background patterns for each image. Lastly, I masked and edited the provided campaign photos and overplayed everything on a bright yellow color field to create a striking, unique approach to the election coverage on Slog.
